NOW RECRUITING PLAYERS!!!

Send us your details at oxfordcricketclub+joinus@gmail.com

We are actively recruiting players of all ages and abilities. From the men’s 1st XI (Home Counties Premier League) to ‘All Star Cricket’ (ages 5+, Friday Nights) we are looking for new members to join Oxford CC.

Here at Oxford CC we boast a lovely HQ in leafy North Oxford (Jordan Hill Sports Ground, shared with Oxford University Press), easily accessible from all parts of Oxfordshire. We can offer all standards of cricket (Women’s, Men’s & Youth Teams) and we require new members today!

Many team sports have suffered lower numbers of participants as a result of (also including prior trends toward individual pursuits) the Covid-19 pandemic, and 2021 appears to be the year where these sports need to lure new talent to the fold! For the beautiful game of cricket to flourish on our green pastures, in a post-pandemic world, we must all come together and get behind the sport we know and love.

Here at Oxford CC we have placed much importance on the development of Youth Cricket over the past 3 years, an area we were sorely lacking in before. Upon appointing Arthur Muir as Director of Youth Cricket, we have seen an incredible rise in participation numbers on our famous Friday night sessions, and hopefully the fruits of his labours will bear in the not-too-distant future. We also launched a Girls XI for the first time in 2020, something we look to repeat, in order to create and maintain a gateway for the younger girls, into the women’s game.

With this part of our house now in good order, we must also look to overhauling and improving the framework and community of our adult section. We can see the problems so many clubs, nationwide, are facing, with more teams seemingly folding each season within Men’s (the Women’s game is on a more positive trajectory it seems, thankfully) ‘League Cricket’.

Our unique selling point must be the variety of on-the-field standards we can offer. A Men’s 1st XI in the highest possible division of club cricket, going down to a 4th XI mixing youth, experience, wide-eyed optimism, and veteran guile! Oxford is a transient city, we have seen more different faces and personalities than any other club in Cherwell League history (the home of the 2nd, 3rd & 4th XI’s)- many ‘Town’ alongside many ‘Gown’ in perfect harmony.

Despite the hustle & bustle of the comings and goings of a city club, we also have an established core of men’s & women’s players, who have been with the club through thick and thin, none more so than Oxfordshire cricket royalty, Rupert Evans. Rupert is still Director of Men’s Cricket, Head Coach and the beating heart of our club. The opportunity to bend Rupe’s ear at nets (finger spinners in particular!) is worth your club subscription fee alone. Rosalyn Porter, Director of Women’s & Girls Cricket, is also a valuable member of the team, putting her passion and varied skill-set to good use. The development of Women’s cricket at OCC has been the real success story of the past 5 years.

As we enter this exciting new dawn, the Covid vaccine will hopefully bring our daily lives this summer back to something approaching normal. We have been instructed by the leagues that we have entered to prepare for a full summer of cricket. This is of course subject to many parameters beyond our control, but we do so full of hope and optimism.

We welcome enquiries from all standards, ages and genders. However steadfast or tentative, please feel free to touch base at oxfordcricketclub+joinus@gmail.com

Appointment of Arthur Muir as Head Youth Coach

Dear Members,

As you are all aware, the club signed a long term lease agreement with Oxford University Press in April 2016 and relocated to OUP Sports Ground at Jordan Hill.  Since moving to the new ground in North Oxford and changing our youth coaching sessions to Fridays evenings we have gained a number of new junior members from the new catchment area.

To build on this successful ground move, our next objective was to appoint a Head Youth Coach to improve our youth coaching programme. I am now pleased to announce that The Oxford CC committee have appointed Arthur Muir as Head Youth Coach.  In the words of Newcastle United football supporters, Arthur “is one of our own”; he’s a product of our youth section. Arthur has played for the club at all youth age groups and for all senior teams, prior to taking on the captaincy of the 3rd XI last season.

Arthur is an ECB Level 2 Coach who has a degree in Coaching & Sports Development. He has been one of our club coaches for the past two years and has also gained experience coaching county development squads and through coaching in schools.

The Head Youth Coach role is crucial to the continued growth and development of Oxford CC Youth Section.  Arthur will be the lead contact person for all youth cricket matters and he will be responsible for all youth cricket development activities, and coaching activities within the club. He will also ensure the club continues to operate to ECB Clubmark minimum quality standards.

Following his appointment, Arthur Muir said, “Having been through the Oxford CC youth section from the age of 7, I am excited to have this opportunity to use my experiences to continue improving and building the youth section.

This Friday night sessions at Jordan Hill during the summer was a huge success, I was thrilled to see the amount of fun that kids, coaches and parents were having on these evenings. A massive thank you to the many volunteers who worked hard during the summer and over the past few years to keep the youth section going, without these volunteers the youth section would not function.

My first job will be to set up a youth committee, which will have regular meetings before and throughout the season. This committee will be responsible for shaping and implementing our youth development programme. With this in mind, if there is anyone who would like to be involved please get in touch with me at (oxfordcricketclub+youth@gmail.com). I will also be looking for volunteers to help with registration on a Fridays, running the BBQ and managing one of the teams.

I am looking forward to continuing building on this season’s excellent start”.

I am confident that Arthur will use his coaching experience and passion for the club to improve and expand the youth section and help the club achieve its youth development objectives. Hopefully you will join me in congratulating Arthur on his appointment; let us all support him to continue developing Oxford CC youth cricketers.

Training information

We ask that a parent/guardian for all young cricketers under the age of 8 remain at training sessions for the full duration of the session.

Please ensure that all boys playing in the U10 age group and above bring a protective box to training. We can provide all other protective equipment but without a box they will not be able to bat in the nets with a hard ball. Youth boxes can be bought cheaply at most sport shops.

Winter Nets
