Oxford CC are pleased to announce the signing of Harry Stephens, George Munsey and Owyn Tong-Jones for the 2016 season. These players will be great addition to Oxford CC men’s squad and provide Oxford a boost as they begin their preparations for their Home Counties Premier League Division 2 promotion push.
Harry Stephens (21) has spent the past two seasons playing for the Unicorns in the Second XI Trophy and T20 competitions. He has played 22 matches for the Unicorns and has impressed, particularly last summer averaging 59.66 and 19.27 with bat and ball respectively in 6 Trophy matches.
Oxford chairman Rupert Evans is delighted with the signing and is pleased to welcome Harry to the club; “Harry is one of the best players in Home Counties Premier League Cricket; he will be a great addition to Oxford CC squad. He will give Oxford a boost for their Home Counties Premier League Division 2 promotion campaign.”
Stephens is a genuine all-rounder – an explosive opening/top order batsman and wicket-taking off-spin bowler. He has also excelled for Berkshire in Minor Counties cricket dating back to his debut in 2013. He boasts a highest score of 153 and last season scored 434 runs at 36.16 in the Unicorns Championship.
Stephens has previously represented Surrey through the age-groups and, between 2010 and 2012 featured in 19 2nd XI games for the County. The all-rounder also played a solitary Championship match for Northamptonshire against Hampshire in May 2013.
At club level, he has spent the past few years in the Home Counties Premier League for Finchampstead (2014) and Datchet (2015), following stints in the Surrey Championship for Guildford (2010-12) and Camberley (2013). His personal highlight in league cricket to date is his magnificent 134-ball 147 (14x4s, 7x6s) against Camberley back in 2012. Chasing 371 for victory, Stephens, having taken 3-wickets in the first innings, blasted Guildford to 261-2 before his dismissal.
George Munsey (22), meanwhile, is a quality left handed top order batter and right arm seamer who currently plays white ball cricket for Scotland. He was selected to represent Scotland for their T20 tour of Ireland in June 2015 and the 2015 ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier in July 2015, including a top score of 62* off 36 balls to guide Scotland to victory against the United Arab Emirates. In addition, he played for Northamptonshire against the touring Australians in August 2015.
Munsey was born in Oxford and played for Cumnor CC before moving to Scotland. Prior to joining Oxford CC, George has represented Scotland, Grange CC, Northamptonshire, Northamptonshire 2nd XI, Nottinghamshire 2nd XI and the Scotland Development XI.
Owyn Tong-Jones (17) is right handed attacking top order batsman who was recommended to the club by Chad Keegan, his former cricket coach at Oratory School.
For the last two seasons he has played for Goring CC 1st XI in Division 1 of the Wintech Berkshire Cricket League (BCL). During 2015, he scored over 1,000 runs in all fixtures for Goring CC with an average of 59.2 including eight 50s & two 100s. In only his second appearance as a guest for Free Foresters CC in 2015 against Amersham CC 1st XI, Owyn made 113.
Currently in the Upper VI Form at The Oratory School completing his A-levels, Owyn has been a regular member of the School’s Cricket 1st XI, hitting three 50s with a highest score of 95.
The BCL recognised his performances with their Young Player “Advance Criteria” award in 2014. In addition, Owyn was named Goring Cricket Club’s Joint Young Player of the Year in 2013 and Senior Batsman of the Year for Goring Cricket Club in both 2014 and 2015.
